Should the Bills trade Nate Clements for a first round pick?

I agree. Let him play out his contract. We'd have more options next year, and a top flight CB on the field in 05. Never even thought of franchising him...that's a good idea.

I say let Nate play an outstanding 'contract-year' season for Buffalo and then slap a franchise tag on him....somebody will pony up the picks to sign him away next offseason (which would probably be better compensation than we'd get on draft day this year), and even if they don't, at least Nate would actually be worth a max deal after another big season - in which case, you smile as you pay the man what he's worth

I don't see us being able to move up high enough to get a Rolle-like CB in the 1st. I don't like this idea, because I see it as taking a BIG step back on D, and I'd like to see JP have a stacked deck behind him in 05.
In other news...
Bills Daily has the team taking LT Terry out of 'Cuse rd 2, and the LSU C rd 3. I would sleep very well on Saturday night if we snagged up those 2.

Buchanon is not the only veteran cornerback currently available. The Miami Dolphins are trying to deal veteran Patrick Surtain for draft picks, but, after an initial phone call, league sources said the teams have not been in touch. Some in the league are also watching Buffalo star Nate Clements closely; Clements, drafted by Williams when he was the Bills' head coach, has one year left on his contract, but Buffalo might deem too expensive to re-sign.

Like Oakland, the Bills lack a first-round pick. Gibbs denied any trade discussions with Buffalo last week and Clements's agent, Neil Cornrich, declined to comment on any potential interest in Clements yesterday, but during a conversation last week spoke glowingly of the player's bond with Williams.

"Nate tremendously enjoyed playing for Coach Williams and he seemed to be a very good fit for Gregg's system," Cornrich said. "Nate led the Bills in interceptions every year he played for coach Williams and he's certainly one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL."

The Redskins and Bills have not discussed a Clements trade, sources said. If negotiations for Buchanon break down, the Redskins could still look to trade down and accrue more draft selections, although the prevailing opinion about the lack of star power available in this draft and number of teams looking to drop down could make finding a trade partner

I thought of the only reason to consider it. Lets say Rolle out of Miami is still available. If that's the case, you could trade Clements and his pending contract issues, reduce your cap issues and pick up a top corner, albiet a rookie, for years to come.

i'm with you guys, however the deal might get sweetened even more between now and draft day. how about nate for next year's first round pick, plus a 2nd rounder this year higher than #55. these are decisions TD may have to make as teams get more desperate, and if we could get a decent replacement (for example Ty Law) in the interim, the immediate impact might not be so bad.

Draft Pool isnt strong enough to support that idea ... he is proven and no sense losing a great CB this yr ... attrition is one thing .. purposly leeting go great talent is another.

I agree with DW. There's no reason why we should feel overly compelled to move into the 1st round this year.

no im still against it :p

just playing devil's advocate... what if the bills would then trade down and get a host of later round picks

I understand the logic. I just dont think its a good idea. We dont need a first that badly imo.
